What is the Property Tax Rebate Program?

    It is a credit of $250 that the Town of Cochrane will issue to qualified taxpayers in the form of a credit against their tax account.

    Who qualifies?

    Seniors:

    • You are 65 years of age or older, as of Dec 31st of the application tax year;
    • You receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) authorized under Part II of the Old Age Age Security Act (Canada);
    • The residence must solely be classified in the Residential Tax Classification;
    • You are assessed as the owner of the residential property for not less than one (1) year immediately preceding the date of application;
    • You occupy the single-family dwelling as your personal residence for the year.

    Persons with Disabilities:

    • You receive a Disability Pension under the ODSPA;
    • The residence must solely be classified in the Residential Tax Classification;
    • You are assessed as the owner of the residential property for not less than one (1) year immediately preceding the date of application;
    • You occupy the single-family dwelling as your personal residence for the year.

    What is the GIS?

    The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) is an income tested, monthly benefit for seniors with limited income. It is a benefit that low income seniors receive in addition to their Old Age Security Pension. This is administered by the Government of Canada and some eligibility include the following for 2024:

    • You are 65 or older
    • You live in Canada
    • You received the OAS pension
    • Your income is below $21,624 if you are single, widowed, or divorced
    • Your income plus the income of your spouse/common-law partner is below:
      • $28,560 if your spouse/common-law partner receives the full OAS pension
      • $51,840 if your spouse/common-law partner does not receive an OAS pension
      • $39,984 if your spouse/common-law partner receives the Allowance

    What is the ODSP?

    A Government of Ontario program that provides money to help you and your eligible family members with living expenses, including food, and rent. Some eligibility criteria includes the following for 2024:

    • You are 18 years of age or older
    • You are an Ontario resident
    • You have assets no greater than the limits set out in the program
    • You are in financial need
    • You meet the program’s definition of a person with a disability or be a member of a presecribed class
      • You have a substantial mental or physical impairment that is continuous or recurrent, and is expected to last one year or more
      • The direct and cumulative effect of your impairment results in a substantial restriction in your ability to work, care for yourself, or take part in community life
      • Your impairment, its likely duration and restrictions have been verified by an approved health care professional

    What kind of proof do I need to provide?

    If you are a first time applicant, proof of age is required, such as a copy of a birth certificate or driver's licence.

    Seniors:

    T4A (OAS) slip with an amount in box 21 for the year preceding the date of application. For example, if you are applying for a 2024 tax credit (on 2024 property taxes), you will provide a 2023 T4A slip.

    Persons with Disabilities:

    Copy of your latest disability pension cheque stub (proof of receipt of assistance paid under the ODSP Act, 1997).

    When can I submit my application?

    You can submit your application from January 1st to May 31st within the current year.

    Do I have to submit an application every year?

    Yes. The taxpayers are responsible to apply for this rebate on an annual basis.

    Will the Town send an application every year?

    No. It is the responsibility of taxpayers to either go online and fill out the application or pick up an application at Town Hall.
